With his unique destiny, Engr. Prof. Sunday Ohousi Onohaebi, FNSE, FNIPE, FNIEEE, was born to a humble family on the 5th day of May, 1964 in the defunct Western Region of Nigeria, which later became Midwest, Bendel State and now Edo State. He hailed from a notable village called Idumu-Ogo, Ukoni, Uromi, Esan North East LGA of Edo State
He holds a Bachelor, Masters and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and a PGDCS in computer Science from the prestigious University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, and an Honourary Doctorate Degree in Public Administration from the Geofidel Institute for Leadership and Management, in collaboration with Stratford University, United Kingdom
Prof. S. O. Onohaebi, worked briefly after his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with Oska-Jo and partners between 1991 and 1992. As a graduate of Electrical Engineering with inclination for impaction of knowledge, he joined the University of Benin as a Graduate Assistant in 1992 and rose through the ranks to the position of a Professor of Electrical Power Systems in 2010.
Engr. Prof. S. O. Onohaebi, FNSE, FNIPEEng, exhibited leadership potentials and was appointed into several administrative positions in the university of Benin, few of which is worth mention here is Head of Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Director, Centre for Maritime Studies and ICT, and subsequently, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, a position he held before proceeding on a Leave of Absence for a National Assignment, to serve as the pioneer Rector of the National Institute of Construction Technology and Management, Uromi, Edo State, a position he still holds as of the time of his Nomination/Appointment as an International Peace Advocate, chronicled as Mayor of Peace.
Professionally, he is a chartered Electrical Engineer registered by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Power Engineers, member, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, MIEEE, USA, Member, Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Nigeria, Fellow, Institute of Management Consultants, FIMC, Fellow, Institute of Management Specialist, FIMS, a chartered Management consultant and many more. Prof. S. O. Onohaebi, by all parameters of measurement, is an accomplished professional and seasoned Engineer who is still tirelessly advancing the cause of the Engineering profession in Nigeria and outside the continent of Africa. Engr. Prof. S. O. Onohaebi, had served in various capacities and had displayed exceptional ingenuity, creativity, innovation and expertise in the advancement of Engineering within and outside Nigeria. He was a member of the Professional Development Board of the Nigerian Society of Engineers at the National level, Member of the Engineering Regulation and Monitoring of COREN, Vice Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Benin branch, 2002, Technical Secretary, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Benin branch, 1999, 2000, 2001, a pioneer Executive Vice President, Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering, NIBE, 2000, and the list goes on.
As an academic, Professor Onohaebi has lectured many students who are now professors, Ph.D holders, etc. He has supervised several PhD thesis, Master’s, Bachelors, etc, and external examiner to many universities and polytechnics. He is an accomplished administrator and researcher with several publications in various academic and professional, local and foreign journals and had successfully presented many of his works in seminars/workshops.
Engr Prof. S. O. Onohaebi, FNSE, FNIPE have also contributed immensely to human capital development in the country. As the pioneer Rector of National Institute of Construction Technology and Management, Uromi, he had encouraged educational advancement of his staff. He believed that the brain resource is the greatest resource on planet Earth and he always graciously approves the applications of those seeking admission for further self-sponsored studies and TETFund sponsored. He had changed the economic fortunes and historical narratives of many indigents but progressive individuals by giving them gainful appointment in the Polytechnic where he is serving as the pioneer Rector. His contributions to Engineering and humanity are so immense, it can neither be overemphasised nor contained in this citation.
Engr. Sunny as he is fondly and popularly known by his many friends, associates and admirers, is a recipient of many awards of Excellence from various Multinational Organisations, Professional, Religious and Academic bodies. He received a Letter of Commendation from the Board of Governing Council of the National Board for Technical Education for an exceptional performance for the immediate Kick-off of academic activities soon after the establishment of the Polytechnic before its peers in the country.
Due to his achievements and selfless commitments, he has received awards of excellence from reputable organisations such as Rotary International, Senior Staff Association of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Esan Forum, University of Benin, NICT Esan Community Forum, Staff of NICT Physical Planning Unit, Mayor of Peace, and many others.
His vision for NICTM when appointed was to create an Institute in which excellence in learning, instructions and global best practices should be the watchword towards training and producing Technologists, Engineers, Industrialists and Entrepreneurs that will become reference points around the world. This prompted the Rector to initiate programmes in conformity with what was obtainable in renowned institutions where hands-on training to provide technically competent individuals which will be self-reliant and become employers of labour instead of relying on job seeking after their training. The skill acquisition programmes were modelled after the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Canada.
He is a humble man with a drive for fairness, progress, excellence and peace which eventualy earned him the Mayor of Peace by the UN-POLAC organisation. He is a practising Roman Catholic and Knight of the Order of St. John International. He is happily married to Lady Mrs. Matilda Obehi Onohaebi. The family is blessed with five loving children.
